Situation: The Untranslated Challenge
Nutrisystem has long been a leader in the weight loss industry, but its success was built almost exclusively on a female demographic. A massive potential market—men interested in weight loss—remained on the sidelines. This audience, nearly as large as the core female demographic, felt alienated by the existing branding, which they perceived as "not for them." The company's potential for growth was being limited by a brand perception that wasn't connecting with half of its potential customers.
Task: My Mission as the Translator
As the UX Lead, my mission was to lead the research and strategy for a foundational question: Is there a viable product for men here, and if so, what does it look like? My goal was to guide my team in translating the unspoken feelings and needs of this untapped male audience into a clear, data-driven strategy. This involved deep research into everything from brand perception and color palettes to the core user experience of the payment and subscription process.
Action: My Holistic Process in Motion
This project was a deep dive into the user's mind, designed to replace assumptions with data.
Discovery & Uncovering the Core Story: I directed a multi-pronged research approach to ensure our insights were both deep and broad.
1-on-1 Interviews: My team conducted confidential interviews to get past surface-level answers and understand the real emotional barriers men faced.
Online Questionnaires: To gather quantitative data, we developed and deployed surveys that validated the scale of the interest and pinpointed key frustrations.

Focus Groups: I oversaw facilitated group discussions that allowed men to speak openly, confirming that the interest was strong, but they felt the "diet" conversation wasn't for them. The core insight was clear: they needed a different path.
Strategy & Execution: Armed with definitive data, I translated the research into a tangible product vision.
I created detailed user personas for the target male audience, giving the product team a clear picture of who they were designing for.
I developed wireframes for key user flows, focusing on a redesigned subscription process that simplified choices and increased transparency, benefiting not only the new male audience but existing female users as well.
I proposed new color palettes and branding concepts that felt more gender-neutral or masculine, moving away from the traditionally feminine palette to create a more inclusive brand experience.
My team's research and strategic recommendations provided the critical validation needed to move forward.
The Greenlight: Our work delivered the definitive data and user insights that gave Nutrisystem the confidence to greenlight a major strategic initiative focused on the male market.
The Blueprint: The user personas and wireframes we developed became the foundational blueprint for the new product's UX and UI, directly shaping its development and marketing strategy.
The Strategic Impact: The most powerful validation of this work is the market success that followed. This research initiative directly resulted in the creation of a new, multi-million dollar product category for the company, which continues to be a significant revenue driver.
What I learned: This project was a powerful lesson in how deep user research can uncover massive, overlooked opportunities. It proved that sometimes the most valuable act of translation is giving a voice to the customers you haven't been listening to.
